March 1st, 2024 the first nonprescription contraceptive pill was available to buy in stores and online.  It is a progestin only pill and is a big step for girls/women in boosting access to birth control.

Last July, 2023 the FDA approved Norgestrel 0.075 mgm manufactured by Opill, HRA Pharmacies as the first birth control on the market.   No prescriptions are needed.

The cost is approximately $20 per month, 6 months for $90.

It is effective within 48 hours after the initial dose.  It is also extremely important to take this low dose pill daily.  I used to always suggest a full cycle for reliability.

This is revolutionary in advancing women's right to choice.

There are multiple contraindications, ie current of past breast cancer, liver disease, some lupus patients,  seizure meds, etc.

It is important to speak to their Pharmacist or Health Care Provider before starting any meds.

Important to remember that OC's do not protect you against STDs.

You might wonder why I have this article on a site that caters to retired women.  We all have grandchildren, nieces, etc and it is very important to be informed as you never know when you may need to talk to a younger girl/woman.

 Be prepared.
