The CDC has issued a statement regarding "fake Botox that has caused 19 people in 9 states to become ill with botulism-type symptoms, blurred vision, double vision, droopy eye difficulty swallowing and more.
Nine of the individuals were hospitalized and treated with botulism antitoxin and are expected to recover.
How did this happen? The suppliers were using a counterfeit Botox product that was contaminated with what we are not yet sure. The CDC is pursuing these incidences.
Botox has been used for cosmetic reasons since 2002, but used prior for medical reason, migraines, excessive sweating and more with good results.
These products were used in unlicensed spas and private Botox parties in a home.
How can you be sure it is safe? Go only to a reputable medical office, ask how many years of experience with Botox injections, and even ask to see the bottle. You can't be too careful.
Please call your medical provider immediately if you have any symptoms post injection.
For cases of suspected systemic botulism, the CDC recommends calling the local or state health department for consultation and antitoxin release (as well as information on reporting adverse events). Alternatively, the 24/7 phone number for the CDC clinical botulism service is 770-488-7100.1
